Back by popular demand, Rose Hutchins’s production of The Little Mermaid returns to the stage at Biddeford's City Theater following its sold-out 2024 premiere in Portland, Maine.

With original music by composer Evan Hart Marsh, this contemporary ballet unites the beauty of classical ballet with expressive contemporary aesthetics and dramatic theatricality to weave a poignant tale of love, sacrifice, and transformation based on Hans Christian Andersen’s timeless story.

With a masterful blend of whimsy, humor, and emotional depth, this production engages audiences of all ages. Prepare to be swept into an enchanting world of movement, music, and storytelling!

Experience this magical production in two formats:
  • full-length ballet: Friday, August 7 at 7:30 PM
  • abbreviated, narrated ballet: Saturday, August 8 at 2:00 PM

The Little Mermaid was funded in part by New England Foundation for the Arts’ New England Dance Fund, with generous support from the Aliad Fund at the Boston Foundation.

Essence

Essence—a dynamic contemporary ballet created against all odds at the height of the 2020 pandemic by choreographer Rose Hutchins in collaboration with composer Allen Russell—made its long-awaited stage premiere in a one-night-only performance. Met with an enthusiastic reception, the evening also included an excerpt from a documentary on the making of Essence and a selection of favorite works that embody the heart of Ballet Bloom Project.

LILA Dance Festival

It was our pleasure to be selected to present an excerpt of Rose Hutchins's The Shape of Relativity at the 2025 LILA Dance Festival, which "aims to create a more inclusive, diverse, and accessible arts community" (lilaproductions.org).

The Shape of Relativity is a contemporary ballet duet choreographed by Rose Hutchins in 2019, set to berimbau compositions by Alexis C. Lamb, recorded by Projeto Arcomusical. Developed through a chance-based process to generate movement prompts, the piece explores how we as humans find meaning in abstract forms and spatial relationships between bodies.
